RUSS & DAUGHTERS CAVIAR CLASS
December 5, 2011
6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. ︱ In The Study at Astor Center

Caviar has long been on the short-list of ultimate gastronomic experiences and luxuries, yet few people have the knowledge to be discerning when eating or buying caviar.
Josh Russ Tupper and Niki Russ Federman, 4th generation owners of Russ & Daughters, will demystify caviar in an evening that is educational and unpretentious.

This insider’s primer will teach you how to select, taste, judge, and present caviar so you will feel confident and knowledgeable eating and serving this precious delicacy, whether it’s for your next big event or just for two.

Along with the tasting, Niki and Josh will share information about the history of caviar, the evolution of the caviar trade, terminology, and anecdotes. This evening gives you the opportunity to learn from the Russ family’s nearly 100 years of experience as premier caviar purveyors, and to become a caviar connoisseur for yourself.

About the presenters:
Niki Russ Federman & Josh Russ Tupper
4th Generation Owners, Russ & Daughters
As a 4th generation member of the Russ family to run Russ & Daughters, you could say that Niki Russ Federman was pretty much born in a herring barrel with a slicing knife in her hand and a penchant for caviar. Josh Russ Tupper began his professional career as a chemical engineer on the West coast before choosing to come back to New York to continue his family’s 100 year-old appetizing legacy.

Purveyors of the highest quality smoked fish, caviar, and specialty foods, Russ & Daughters is New York’s premier appetizing shop. Since 1914, this landmark NYC institution has been continuously owned and operated by four generations of the Russ family. In the same spot on East Houston Street, and run by the same family, for nearly a century, Russ & Daughters continues to provide the tastes, traditions, and old-world class of a true New York experience.

The Russ & Daughters Caviar Primer Class will take place in The Study at Astor Center:
399 Lafayette Street (at East 4th St.) NY NY 10003.

To sign up for the class, please visit: http://www.astorcenternyc.com/class-a-caviar-primer-with-russ-daughters.ac. The cost for the class, which includes three types of Russ & Daughters caviar, and accompanying beverage pairings by the experts at Astor Center, is $159.

In collaboration with James Cohan Gallery, Russ & Daughters is pleased to present the exhibition Videobytes, an installation of video and film works shown in a continuous loop 24-hours a day, seven days a week in the Russ & Daughters storefront window. The presentation will run from Friday, November 4th to Sunday, December 11th.

With work that spans a fifty-year period, Videobytes features pieces by internationally renowned experimental filmmakers Robert Breer and Harry Smith, conceptual artists John Baldessari and Gordon Matta-Clark, and a younger generation of video and performance artists including Kate Gilmore, Hiraki Sawa and Susana Mendes Silva. The common link between all seven of these artists is their engagement with process, performance and materials. This exhibition was organized by Elyse Goldberg and Christine Minas.

The engagement with process and materials is one that is essential at Russ & Daughters as well. For nearly 100 years, the Russ & Daughters family and staff have maintained the gastronomic tradition of appetizing in New York - personally selecting only the finest fish, hand-slicing smoked salmon with paper thin precision, and serving as the heart of the community-with artisanal skill and passion. Throughout its history, Russ & Daughters has been a hub of culture and community on the Lower East Side. When Yiddish and vaudeville theaters populated Second Avenue, Russ & Daughters stayed open until 2:00 a.m. on Saturdays to accommodate the post-theater crowd of actors, musicians, and audience members who flooded into Russ & Daughters looking for lox for a late dinner or for the next day’s brunch. During the difficult decades of the 60’s through the 80’s, when few people other than artists and bohemians lived or even ventured into the neighborhood, Russ & Daughters was a beacon of nourishment and community. It is in this spirit of dialogue between food, community and the arts that Russ & Daughters has partnered with the James Cohan Gallery to now host the exhibition Videobytes.

We hope that you’ll visit Russ & Daughters to view Videobytes. The shop is open seven days a week: 8:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m. Monday-Friday, 9:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m. on Saturday, and 8:00 am-5:30 p.m. on Sunday, and we are thrilled to present Videobytes 24-HOURS A DAY, in the shop’s window.

Stay tuned to this blog for excerpts, photos, and more information throughout the duration of the exhibition. If you have questions about the artists or organizers, we’d love to hear from you. Please write to jen(@)russanddaughters.com or Tweet to @LoxPopuli and we’ll try to post some Q&As on the blog too.

Maya is easy going, yet willful, and pure sweetness. Impatient to come onto the scene, Maya defied her due date and instead gave us a New Year’s surprise almost three weeks early.

Many thanks to all of you who have shared congratulations and love with us.
May the tradition of Russ & Daughters continue for many more generations to come in our family and in yours.
