Paper Magazine’s Carol Lee stopped by to “rip up a herring,” or a few herring, actually, with us.
Some of our older customers had taught me that when they were young, it was quite common to ask someone out to “rip up a herring.” The phrase indicated a sort of joyous sharing, like “breaking bread.” I like Carol’s slight tweak of the saying, as we had fun “ripping a herring” together. Paper, a longtime arbiter of cool, definitely gets it. “Who knew that herring could be so exciting!” she wrote on their blog, titled “Word Up!”
