On Wednesday, August 26, 2009, Astor Center will host Russ & Daughters: A Taste of Appetizing, an intimate tasting that will span 100 years of appetizing. Attendees will get a schmear of stories, history and information behind this New York food tradition and landmark store too.
Astor Center writes:
Mark Russ Federman, representing the third of the four generations of Russ & Daughters, will guide you on a tasting of his extraordinary wares. From humble Herring to luscious Lox, Mark will explain all – accompanied by a generous side order of the stories behind this New York culinary landmark, judged by the Smithsonian Institute as “part of New York’s cultural heritage.”
Joining Mark will be Russ & Daughters’ long-time manager, Herman “The Artistic Slicer” Vargas and the 4th Generation of the Russ Family to run the store: Niki Russ Federman and Joshua Russ Tupper. After having been at the helm of the “Louvre of Lox” for almost 30 years, Mark is currently working on his culinary memoir.
This event is also a wonderful chance to experience Astor Center, the city’s pioneering center devoted to wine and food studies. It has sold out every time Astor has presented it in the past, so reserve your spot now! For tickets to Russ & Daughters: A Taste of Appetizing, please visit Astor Center’s website.
