November 10th, 2008 · 6:57 am - LoxPopuli

Halvah from Russ & Daughters was featured in this weekend’s T Style: Design & Living Magazine in The New York Times. The article, by Merrill Stubbs, titled, “The New Staples: the Ingredients of the Season, From Near and Far” noted:

Halvah
From $7 a pound at Russ & Daughters, 179 East Houston Street. Call (800) 787-7229.

Typically made with either sesame seeds or semolina and sweetened with honey or sugar, this rich, crumbly treat is popular throughout the Middle East, South Asia and the Balkans. At Anthos in New York, the pastry chef Zak Miller makes his own halvah to accompany a chocolate-caramel torta. Wylie Dufresne goes savory at WD-50, also in New York, sprinkling powdered halvah over steamed perch with artichokes and bamboo rice.

We currently have vanilla halvah, marble halvah, marble nut halvah, dark chocolate-covered seven-layer halvah, and pistachio halvah.
